NEW …GREAT BARRIER ISLAND BEE CO

MANUKA HONEY 1880 RANGE

(replaces the Vanilla Bee range / same great honey aroma and ingredients…just new packaging)

A true story…….

Great Barrier Island is located just off the coast of Auckland and is proudly the home of the first commercial beekeeping activities in New Zealand around “1880”.

It was here the beekeepers would access the beehives on horseback to transport the raw honey comb out of the bush to their honey sheds. They would then utilise an old Kauri honey press to extract the honey and put into tin pots. The remaining beeswax was then gently heated and melted with wooden boards dipped in and out to create a sheet of wax.

It was then passed through a unique foundation wax roller, to form new foundation wax sheets, that were reset into the wooden frames and later placed back in the beehives to start the cycle again.

The potted-up honey was then placed on a horse cart and taken to the other side of the island, where it was then shipped back to Auckland on the “Rosella”, known as “The Honey Boat” skippered by the Blackwell’s.

Today we are proud to be the custodians of the old honey press and recently the Rosella, which is all part of a true Kiwi story that inspired the Great Barrier Island Bee Co and our unique new “Manuka Honey 1880” body care range.

Help from the hive

Harvesting  Manuka Honey
In early spring during the months of September and October the Manuka trees burst into flower . Around parts of the island it almost looks like snow has fallen !. This is an incredible sight and marks the beginning of what is known as the “honey flow” as bees begin there collection from the Manuka  flowers and deposit in carefully placed bee hives . The actual harvest and extraction of the honey normally starts about December and carries through to around late February pending seasonal conditions.

Royal Jelly
Royal Jelly is a milky like substance created by the worker Bees. The Jelly is secreted from glands in the Bee’s head. It is known as Bees Milk. (a bit like Colostrum from a cow) It is made for the nourishment of the Queen Bee. It is also fed in small quantities to all larvae in the colony during the first 2-3days of their development.
Benefits when using Royal Jelly

  • Contains some of the most essential nutrients like minerals, enzymes and amino acids.
  • With regular use Royal Jelly may assist with more firmer and elastic skin.
  • May also assist with a softer and smoother feel.
  • Generally accepted as being nourishing and stimulating

Propolis
The Bee’s collect resinous sap from trees and plants and bring back to the hive, where they combine it with their own secretions and form a glue-like mixture known as Propolis. The Bee’s use Propolis to protect the hive from infections and moisture lost.
Benefits when using Propolis

  • Retains Moisture.
  • Leaves a protective barrier.
  • Also has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities in addition to its wound healing

Beeswax
Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the bee hive of honey bees. Typically, for a honey bee keeper, 10 kg of honey yields 1 kg of wax.

  • It provides greater permanence on skin and lip surfaces
